Fruity, warm and classic: The 7 best gins for your Christmas cocktails
Gin has been experiencing a real revival over the last few years and there are now so many exciting examples available.
The beauty of gin is its flexibility: while juniper is the key element, it’s up to the distiller which other botanicals to include. And then, in a gin and tonic, the brand of mixer and the garnish are extra creative elements.
But gin is also a key component in martinis and negronis, which are officially the world’s most delicious cocktails (according to me, anyway). Here are seven of the best examples…

Jinzu Gin £33.45, 31dover.com (0333 900 3131), 41.3% alcohol
There’s a Japanese twist to this gin, with sake and botanicals such as cherry blossom in the mix. It’s warm, exotic and fruity, and you can really get the pretty lemon and cherry notes, alongside the attractive smooth texture.
Tanqueray No Ten Gin £32, Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury’s, 47.3% alcohol
This is so sophisticated. It has nice warm, complex flavours of citrus, spice and herbs, with less emphasis on the juniper. Unusually, whole citrus fruits are used here, not just the peel, and this makes it distinctive.
Gin Lane 1751 London Dry Gin £26.99, Selfridges, 40% alcohol
Here’s a powerful dry gin with strong juniper notes designed to hold its flavour in classic cocktails. There’s a delightful exotic spiciness here, as well, along with fine herbal notes.
Cotswolds Gin £37.50 or £33.75 each for six, Majestic, 46% alcohol
This is quite remarkable. It’s an exotic gin with a slightly salty edge as well as complex flavours of citrus and cardamom. There’s such a flavour intensity here and real “edges” to the taste.
Adnams Copper House Dry Gin £26.99, Waitrose, 40% alcohol
A quite brilliant spirit, this is superbly aromatic, leading to a mouth that’s fresh and tangy with complex juniper, aniseed, herb and spice notes.
Taste the Difference Blackfriars London Dry Gin £16, Sainsbury’s, 43% alcohol
This offers great value for a top-quality gin. It’s lively and floral with a luscious rich texture and sweet notes of juniper and citrus. Then on the finish, it’s warm and spicy.
No 3 London Dry Gin £35, Waitrose, 40% alcohol
A beautiful, high-end, traditional gin, this is one of my favourites. Fresh, lively, complex and focused with intense juniper flavours, it’s just perfect for a dry martini.
